A seasoned media professional in both digital and print media, Carmen has written for South China Morning Post, Hong Kong’s largest English-language daily. She also spent a number of years in magazine publishing, working at titles including Surface and Town & Country.
In 2004 she founded Racialicious, an award-winning, influential blog about the intersection of race and pop culture. Her views were featured regularly in media outlets including CNN, MSNBC, and The New York Times. She visited as a guest lecturer at Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia, among many other colleges and universities across the country. Carmen was an early pioneer in podcasting, launching a companion podcast for the blog in 2005. She has spoken about digital media trends at journalism and media conferences hosted by organizations including The Poynter Institute and BlogHer.
In 2010 she joined her husband’s then-new martial arts school, Urban Martial Arts, as General Manager. In just four years, she tripled the number of students enrolled and expanded the school’s space to double its size. She landed Urban Martial Arts mentions in top business publications including Inc, Entrepreneur, and Fox Business. In 2015, Urban Martial Arts was named one of New York City’s top 50 small businesses by leading radio station 1010 WINS.
Born and raised mostly in Hong Kong, Carmen also lived in Shanghai and Belgium before making New York her permanent home. Carmen graduated from Columbia University with a BA in Political Science and lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband and two daughters.
