The holidays are about more than gifts; to me, this is the best time of year to prioritize family togetherness. While we want to put our loved ones first all year long, there just seem to be more organic opportunities during the holiday season.

There’s so much we don’t want to miss, while the rest of the calendar year, family entertainment is up to us to come up with and it easily gets pushed to the back burner. Sometimes the traditions my family starts in December spill over into the rest of the year (like when we started a weekly family movies night). Here are a few ways you can foster family togetherness over the holidays.

1. Check out Christmas light displays
Look up the best light displays in your area, bundle up, pile in the car Griswold-style, and go on a hunt! Play Christmas music, get some hot cocoa to-go, and watch as your children’s faces light up just as brightly as those displays.

2. Host a weekly family movie night
We’ve designated one night a week to watch a different holiday movie. We all get into our comfy and adorable Vineyard Vines pajamas, break out the chocolate-drizzled popcorn (because a little Christmas indulgence is a must), and settle in for one of our favorites!

3. Get dolled up for a festive show near you
Find holiday-themed performances and pageants, get dressed in your Sunday best, and enjoy an evening of entertainment. Whether it’s a Broadway show or a community performance, make it a festive affair! Don sequins and velvet, and sing along with the carols!

4. Take a “sleigh” ride
Lots of cities have horse-drawn carriage rides, if not actual sleigh rides, this time of year. Grab a hot beverage, get cozy under a blanket, and take in the city (or rural) holiday scenery as if in olden times! And don’t forget to bring those roasted chestnuts for the road!

5. Bake together
This one’s a super fun and easy way to spend time with the family. No need to bundle up; in fact, you can even do it in your Vineyard Vines pajamas! Choose an easy recipe, or buy pre-made cookies and simply have fun decorating (and eating) them!
