Why You Should Try the Spa At Gran Hotel La Florida in Barcelona

At 10:30 on a Wednesday morning I waited on the corner of Passieg de Gracia to be picked up by a chauffeur and driven from Barcelona city center to the top of Tibidabo’s hill where I would spend the day at the 5-star Gran Hotel La Florida.

Just a 20-minute drive through the hills and we arrived at the castle-like building. Opened in 1924, the Gran Hotel La Florida has welcomed a variety of notable names including Ernest Hemingway, James Stewart, Princess Fabiola and the Prince of Belgium. Today the hotel is still regarded as one of the top luxury resorts in Barcelona with 70 guest rooms and 7 suites with outdoor jacuzzis and private terraces. But the hotel’s location is what really makes it stand out: at 1,600 feet above sea level guests have panoramic views of Barcelona and an unbeatable view of the famous Sagrada Familia.

Upon arrival I was given a drink at the hotel’s bar and taken to the outdoor terrace to make the most of the sun and views. Built on Tibidabo’s hill, the terrace is made up of four different levels: the top level where the outdoor pool, bar and the dining area are situated, and the three garden levels below with private sun-lounges, benches and swing chairs.

While I was sunbathing I noticed that the majority of the hotel’s guests were families with young children. This came as no surprise given the range of leisure activities available in the area such as the Tibidabo Amusement Park just five minutes away. Accordingly, the hotel’s suites have been specifically designed so that family rooms are connected and qualified personnel are available to babysit upon request.

After an hour of sunbathing I was collected by the spa’s therapist, Leticia, and taken to the L’Occitane spa on the ground floor. On our way to the spa’s treatment rooms we stopped at the water zone which hosts a 120-foot indoor and outdoor pool, jacuzzi, steam bath, sauna, pressure showers and gym.

L’Occitane en Provence is a brand inspired by simple values, tradition and nature and the spa at the Gran Hotel La Florida is a natural extension of the L’Occitane brand. The walls are painted fresh yellow and wooden brown to give the spa a summer feel and vases of bright flowers are generously placed around the entirety of the ground floor. But it’s the spa’s scent—a mixture of warm essential oils with fresh flowers, which truly transports you to the Provence region.

I was given the 90-minute Immortelle Divine Eternal Youth Secret facial, an anti-aging facial based on L’Occitane’s discovery of the Immortelle flower on the island of Corsica in 2001. Immortelle is a flower that never fades, even when picked. Thanks to its high anti-oxidant levels it is particularly great for aging skin since it encourages the growth and regeneration of new cells.

After the facial, I spent 20 minutes in the spa’s relaxation room then headed back to the hotel’s outdoor terrace for some lunch in the sun. I was treated to pasta with a glass of champagne, followed by a sorbet, and then made my way back to sun-lounges for a final hour of sunbathing before being driven back to the city center.

Lorelle Williams received complimentary spa services and refreshments at Gran Hotel La Florida as part of a press trip to the property.
