Whether it’s a city break or a week in the sun, planning a vacation can be one of the most exciting parts of a trip. While everything from first aid kits to spare sandals will be included on your checklist, how often do we include romance? OK, planned romance sounds about as exciting as jury duty, but with just a little preparation and lots of imagination, the end results are more than worth it.
1. Remember that music is the food of love
They say music is the food of love, so get cooking. There’s nothing more effective than music when it comes to enhancing our mood. Whether it’s a track from your first kiss, first date or first dance, load those musical memories on to your phone or iPad, and get them playing when the time is right!
2. Leverage the power of surprise
Despite parenthood practically abolishing all possibility of nice surprises, the good news is that a vacation gives so many great opportunities to rekindle some sparkle with a simple gesture. Contact the concierge beforehand and arrange for a bouquet of flowers or bottle of Champagne to be waiting upon check-in, or secretly book a table at a romantic restaurant. Little surprises can really ramp up the romance while you’re away. Try hiding a note in your partner’s case or under a pillow. Just a few words to let them know how much you’re enjoying spending time together will set the sweetest of tones.
3. Plan for some time alone
Many parents feel guilty about spending time alone whilst away on vacation, but it’s important to enjoy some quality time together as a couple. The key is to find the solution that works for you. Of course, one obvious idea is to take extended family members with you. Whilst this usually guarantees a sitter, it’s not for everyone. An in-room babysitter can be a great way to make the most of a romantic evening on the town. Many travel companies now provide details of reputable sitters, and if booked in advance of your trip, the necessary background and reference checks can be made before you leave.
4. Take advantage of the kids club
If it’s a more intimate type of romance you’re after, placing the kids in to your resort’s kids club could be the perfect solution. Take a bottle of Champagne back to your room and rekindle the romance.
5. Maximize your space
If a sitter isn’t for you, ensure you have the space for some adult time within your accommodation. Spaces such as separate living areas or a balcony can provide the perfect place to enjoy some romantic relaxation sans children during the twilight hours.
A family vacation is one of life’s true pleasures, creating memories that last a lifetime. It is important however, to remember that whilst you are parents, you are also a couple, and a vacation can be the perfect way to reignite the spark – it just takes a little planning!
